You Are Protected Under California Law!
For over 40 years, the CSA has dedicated its resources to the struggle against discrimination in housing. “Fair Housing” is a legal framework that is an important part of our civil rights history.
Fair housing exists in a community when individuals of similar income have the same range of housing choices. Discrimination occurs when a housing provider refuses to rent or sell a home, offers unequal terms to different people, quotes different prices, or applies different policies based on race or color, ancestry or national origin, religion, gender, disability, marital or familial status, sexual orientation, source of income, or any other arbitrary status.
A landlord is NOT discriminating when they are using income, credit rating, or any other pertinent information that directly relates to the ability and willingness to pay rent as a means of consideration for rent or sale.
Though we have made great strides in addressing discrimination in housing, it remains a continual point of concern for marginalized populations. If you would like a presentation by one of our expert housing counselors please call our office or e-mail us at firstname.lastname@example.org .
In addition to the anti-discrimination work we do with fair housing clients, we also assist tenants and landlords to resolve disagreements that are not necessarily based on discrimination.
Through our tenant-landlord reconciliatory and mediation services we attempt to get these parties to work together to resolve issues fairly. We will work with you to assess your situation, develop a plan of action, and/or connect you to the resources you need.
CSA San Diego County has contracts to provide tenant/landlord mediation to the following communities:
