CSA San Diego County, in partnership with United African American Ministerial Action Council, began a mentoring program with Lincoln High School students during the fall of 2012. This current school year, 2017-2018, we have begun our 5th year with the program. We have already had 3 successful sessions where students have engaged in a number of activities. These activities were used for the mentors and mentees to get to know one another and feel comfortable sharing any information they wanted to.
The Lincoln Leaders program is done with San Diego State University students who inspire and support academic success and exceptional character within the students of Lincoln High. During the program’s meetings, knowledge concerning college, career and life skills will be shared through conversations and activities. One of the goals of Lincoln Leaders is to show students that they are not alone, and that the mentors are here to help them with challenges that may arise in their lives.
This program is made available to the students of Lincoln High thanks to Principal Jose E. Sotoramos. His popular saying is “You’re going to give in, before I give up.” He has shown a strong commitment to solving problems for both the students and the community. This program is beneficial to the mentees as well as rewarding for the mentors. The mentors, throughout the year, focus on enhancing the mentees cultural and social understanding as well as being critical thinkers and problem solvers in order to contribute to the community.
